A North Korean soldier crossed the heavily militarized border to defect to South Korea.

A North Korean soldier has defected to South Korea by crossing the heavily militarized border on the eastern part of the Korean peninsula, according to Seoul's military. The individual, identified as a staff sergeant, was found in Gangwon province, still wearing their North Korean military uniform.

South Korean authorities are currently investigating the defector's motives and goals. This marks the second such defection in just two weeks, following another North Korean's crossing of the maritime border in the Yellow Sea on August 8.

Defections across the Korean border are rare and risky, with most North Koreans typically escaping to the South via China or other third countries. The number of successful defections had dropped significantly during the pandemic due to strict border controls, but these numbers have been rising again since the easing of restrictions in 2023.

Prosecutors have indicted a driver involved in a deadly car crash near Seoul City Hall.

Prosecutors have indicted a 68-year-old driver, surnamed Cha, for negligent driving resulting in deaths and injuries following a tragic accident near Seoul City Hall on July 1. The crash resulted in nine fatalities and five injuries after Cha's car drove in the wrong direction on a one-way road, hitting pedestrians and crashing into other vehicles.

Cha initially claimed that sudden unintended acceleration caused the accident, but investigators found no mechanical defects in the car's brake system. Evidence suggested that Cha mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, as the brake was not applied during the incident, and the pattern on Cha's shoe matched that of the accelerator. The National Forensic Service confirmed that the vehicle's brakes and brake lights were functioning correctly.
