NEWS 📰

Yoon’s "nuclear-based" alliance with the U.S. is being criticized for potentially subordinating Korea to Washington's interests.

The Yoon Suk-yeol administration in South Korea has aggressively pursued stronger alliances with the US and Japan, culminating in the adoption of two significant documents in July. These documents, however, have sparked concerns over South Korea’s military sovereignty and its growing subordination to these powerful nations.

The first document, the “US-South Korea Guidelines for Nuclear Deterrence and Nuclear Operations on the Korean Peninsula,” strengthens cooperation between the two countries on nuclear deterrence. It commits South Korea to support US nuclear operations, which critics argue reinforces US dominance and could lead to increased military dependence on American weapon systems.

The second document, the Trilateral Security Cooperation Framework (TSCF), signed by South Korea, the US, and Japan, institutionalizes trilateral military cooperation, focusing on the Indo-Pacific region. Critics warn this could draw South Korea into a broader geopolitical conflict with China and even see Japanese troops on the Korean Peninsula—a sensitive issue given historical tensions.

These developments are seen as steps toward a new alliance system that could entangle South Korea in a Cold War-like scenario, with its military increasingly tied to the strategic interests of the US and Japan. Critics argue that South Korea must resist these moves to maintain its sovereignty and avoid becoming a frontline state in a broader regional conflict.

The number of young people choosing to be economically inactive reached a new high in July.

In July, a record number of young South Koreans, aged 15 to 29, chose to remain economically inactive without a specific reason, reaching 443,000, according to data from Statistics Korea. This marks an increase of 42,000 from the previous year and is the highest level ever recorded for any July.

These individuals, who are neither employed nor actively seeking jobs, mostly expressed a lack of desire to find work, with 75.6% indicating they weren't job hunting, either because they wanted a break or believed suitable jobs weren't available. This trend, which saw a sharp rise during the COVID-19 pandemic, now surpasses similar figures for those in their 30s and 40s, who stood at 288,000 and 284,000, respectively.

One-night stands in dramas spark debate: Are they inappropriate or a matter of freedom of expression?

Recent South Korean dramas "Good Partner" and "My Sweet Mobster" have sparked controversy for their portrayal of one-night stands, especially given their 15+ age ratings. Critics argue that these scenes are inconsistent with the characters' established identities and could negatively influence young viewers' perceptions of relationships.

In "Good Partner," a character with a history of skepticism toward relationships suddenly engages in a one-night stand, which many found out of character and clichéd. Similarly, "My Sweet Mobster" features an unexpected pregnancy following a one-night stand, leading to concerns about the message being sent to viewers.
