South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik warned that developing nuclear weapons would severely damage the country's alliance with the U.S. and disrupt financial markets. Despite calls from some South Korean officials to develop a domestic nuclear arsenal in response to North Korea's growing nuclear threat, Shin emphasized that such a move would lead to economic and diplomatic fallout, including potential penalties for violating the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Shin advocated for strengthening the U.S.-South Korea alliance as the best strategy to counter North Korea. He also highlighted the broader geopolitical tensions in Northeast Asia, influenced by the U.S.-China rivalry and the Ukraine war, and mentioned concerns over North Korea's increasing military cooperation with Russia.
