Schools are being encouraged to improve sex education as deepfake crimes among youth increase.
The rise of deepfake exploitation among teenagers in South Korea has led to calls for a major overhaul of the country’s sex education system. Current school programs, consisting of 15 hours per year, fail to address new digital threats like deepfake crimes, leaving students unaware of the dangers.
Experts point out that sex education varies widely across schools due to a lack of standardized guidelines. Many teachers, who may not be trained in these topics, struggle to teach about issues like gender equality and sexual harassment effectively.
To address these gaps, experts suggest integrating sex and digital safety education more frequently into the school curriculum, starting from a young age. They also recommend involving parents in the education process to raise awareness at home.
Additionally, there is a push for better training for teachers so they can deliver higher-quality education on these critical topics.
Overall, there is a growing consensus that South Korea’s sex education needs to be updated to better protect young people in today’s digital world.
Exports increased for the 11th consecutive month in August, driven by strong demand for chips.
In August, Korea's exports continued their upward trend for the 11th consecutive month, driven largely by strong demand for semiconductors. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, exports rose 11.4% year-on-year to $57.9 billion, while imports increased by 6% to $54 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of $3.83 billion. This marks 15 straight months of trade surplus for the country.
Semiconductor exports were particularly robust, jumping 38.8% year-on-year to $11.9 billion, fueled by new smartphone releases and increased investment in artificial intelligence by major tech firms. Shipments of ships also surged by 80%, largely due to high demand for liquefied natural gas carriers. However, exports in the automotive sector fell by 4.3% due to production disruptions, and steel exports dropped 1.7% amid rising global competition.
By destination, exports to China rose by 7.9% to $11.4 billion, with strong sales of semiconductors and AI-powered mobile devices. Exports to the U.S. and the European Union also saw significant increases, with shipments to the U.S. reaching $10 billion and those to the EU hitting a record $6.43 billion, driven by health products and mobile devices.
Industry Minister Ahn Duk-Geun noted that while the country is on track for record exports, geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East remain a concern. The government plans to monitor the situation and provide necessary support. Last year, Korea's exports declined by 7.4% due to global economic uncertainties and a weak performance in the semiconductor sector.

Can Teddy's new girl group MEOVV rise to become the next BLACKPINK?
K-pop fans, both in Korea and worldwide, are eagerly awaiting the debut of MEOVV, the first girl group launched by The Black Label, set for September. The excitement stems from the group's strong connection to Teddy, a well-known producer who previously created iconic groups like 2NE1 and BLACKPINK under YG Entertainment before founding his label.
MEOVV has generated significant buzz, especially after rumors suggested that notable figures like Ella Gross and dancer Bailey Sok might be part of the group. As the debut nears, anticipation has only grown. Ella, the first member to be revealed, has already captivated fans with her popularity on social media and her connections with BLACKPINK, earning her the nickname "Little Jennie."
The rest of the group—Gawon, Sooin, Anna, and Narin—have also drawn attention for their distinct looks and personas. With a unique concept inspired by cats and Teddy's reputation for creating powerful and trendy music, MEOVV is expected to make a big impact in the competitive K-pop scene.
The industry is watching closely to see if MEOVV will live up to the hype and redefine K-pop girl groups with their anticipated debut. Fans are hoping they’ll become the "monster rookie" that brings a fresh wave to the K-pop world.
The series was written by Choi Yu-na, a divorce lawyer who began the project as a webtoon in 2019. She juggled her legal career and family responsibilities while crafting the script over five years. The show reflects a growing trend in K-content, where divorce-themed dramas are increasingly popular, driven by societal changes and the normalization of divorce. However, while these dramas offer deeper explorations of marital issues, some critics argue that reality shows on the same topic often oversimplify and sensationalize these complex issues.
