NEWS

South Korea announced a leak from its Military Intelligence Command.

South Korea is investigating a leak from its top military intelligence command that may have exposed sensitive information, including personal data on agents abroad, to North Korea. The Korea Defense Intelligence Command, which focuses on North Korea, experienced the leak, and the military promises stern action against those responsible while investigating.

This leak is unusual as the command is one of South Korea's key spy agencies. The command runs a network of undercover agents to gather intelligence on North Korea. If personal data of these agents reached North Korea, it could severely harm South Korea's intelligence efforts.

The last major breach occurred in 2018 when an officer sold classified information to foreign agents. This incident highlights the ongoing intense intelligence rivalry between North and South Korea.

North Korea's cyber-espionage activities are also a concern. Recently, the U.S., Britain, and South Korea warned of North Korea's efforts to steal military secrets through hacking. The U.S. has indicted a North Korean operative for hacking various American entities and offered a reward for information leading to his arrest.

Drone deliveries to islands and remote regions will start in August.

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is launching the first nationwide drone delivery service to improve convenience for residents in remote islands, regional areas, and national parks. Starting in August, the K-drone delivery service will initially cover 32 island districts, 17 regional parks, and one port, delivering food, daily necessities, and first-aid supplies.

Drones can carry up to 3 kg per delivery, and hubs will allow residents to send items nationwide. The service began in three island districts off Jeju Island on July 19. Safety systems have been prepared in collaboration with various agencies and universities. Large companies are interested in using the system for delivering electronics. The service aims to increase its capacity and expand nationwide.
