NEWS 📰

The men's makeup market is starting to gain momentum in Korea.

Korea's men's beauty market is rapidly growing, as evidenced by the overwhelming success of CJ Olive Young’s recent "Men's Beauty" pop-up store in Seoul. From August 30 to September 8, the popup drew over 12,000 visitors, with 80% being men, signaling a shift in the male grooming industry. Young men, particularly those in their 20s, are increasingly interested in low-intensity beauty products like moisturizers that brighten skin tone, offer sun protection, or conceal blemishes. Many are embracing a natural, minimalistic grooming routine.

The event highlighted the emerging market potential for men’s cosmetics, with many men testing and purchasing products like lip balms and skin-correcting lotions, often recommended by their girlfriends. CJ Olive Young and other brands are responding by expanding product lines that blend basic skincare with makeup effects. This includes tone-up lotions combining hydration, sunscreen, and blemish correction, which have become particularly popular.

This trend is also visible across other retail platforms like Musinsa and Daiso, which reported significant increases in sales of men's grooming products. YouTuber Kim Jung-won, who runs a men's grooming channel with 320,000 subscribers, witnessed the rising demand firsthand, particularly after launching his own men’s cosmetics brand in 2023.

As society's attitude toward male grooming continues to evolve, beauty companies are increasingly catering to this growing market segment, releasing more targeted products that offer subtle, easy-to-use solutions for young men interested in self-care.

Traffic heading to Seoul is heavily congested on the fourth day of the Chuseok holiday.

Seoul-bound traffic on major expressways was heavily congested on Tuesday, the fourth day of Korea's extended Chuseok holiday, with relief expected by early Wednesday morning, according to the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC). Chuseok, a major fall harvest festival in Korea, was celebrated on Tuesday, with the holiday stretching from Saturday to Wednesday.

As of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, travel times were significantly longer than usual. For instance, it took nearly eight hours to drive from Mokpo to Seoul, six and a half hours from Busan, and five and a half hours from Daegu. The KEC projected that 6.69 million vehicles would be on the roads that day, with approximately 510,000 traveling toward Seoul and 490,000 heading out from the capital region.

While outbound traffic from Seoul remained smooth, the KEC anticipated the congestion heading into the city would begin to ease by 3 to 4 a.m. on Wednesday.
