Seoul experiences a record 37th tropical night this summer

Seoul has recorded its 37th tropical night this summer, marking the highest number of such nights in the city's history, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). A tropical night occurs when nighttime temperatures remain above 25 degrees Celsius between 6:01 p.m. and 9 a.m. the following day. This new record surpasses the previous high of 36 tropical nights set in 1994.

In addition, Jeju Island has experienced its 40th consecutive tropical night, making it the second-longest streak on record for the island. The heatwave is expected to persist, with apparent high temperatures ranging from 33 to 35 degrees Celsius across most regions through Sunday morning.

The Presidential Office announced that discussions with the U.S. are ongoing regarding a nuclear plant project in the Czech Republic.

The South Korean Presidential Office announced on Saturday that it is actively engaged in discussions with the U.S. government to resolve a dispute involving a nuclear power plant construction project in the Czech Republic. The conflict centers around Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and the American energy firm Westinghouse Electric.

A South Korean consortium led by KHNP was recently selected as the preferred bidder for the Czech Republic's nuclear power plant project, estimated at around 24 trillion won ($18.06 billion). If finalized, this would be Korea's first overseas nuclear power plant construction deal since 2009, following the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in the UAE.

However, the project faces legal challenges due to an ongoing court case initiated by Westinghouse in 2022. The American firm seeks to prevent KHNP from exporting nuclear power plants under a U.S. export control regulation. Although a U.S. district court dismissed Westinghouse's lawsuit last year, the company has appealed the ruling.

The Presidential Office emphasized its commitment to closely consult with the U.S. to successfully export Korea's nuclear technology to the Czech Republic. Additionally, the governments of both countries have agreed on the importance of cooperation in energy sectors, including nuclear power, renewable energy, and hydrogen.

Plans are also underway for President Yoon Suk Yeol's staff to visit the Czech Republic next month to strengthen bilateral economic ties and further discuss the nuclear power project.

How DAY6 Won the Hearts of Teens and Adults in Their 30s.

During the men's 58-kilogram taekwondo final at the Paris Olympics on August 8, 20-year-old Park Tae-joon made history as the first Korean to win gold in his category. He entered the arena listening to "Time of Our Life" by DAY6, which he said resonated with his desire to make history.

The song, originally released in 2019, has recently seen a resurgence, climbing to seventh on the Circle Chart. Its renewed popularity began in October 2022, after a performance by DAY6 members on "Immortal Songs." The song has since become a popular anthem, especially around the New Year.
