NEWS

The main union of Samsung Electronics in South Korea will go on strike over pay starting Thursday.

The union representing 36,500 workers, which accounts for about 30% of Samsung Electronics' South Korean workforce, is planning a strike during a national holiday on Thursday. The union believes that with many workers away, the company will struggle to maintain production lines. Samsung, however, stated it plans to prevent any production disruptions and will adhere to a "no-work, no-pay" policy while continuing efforts to resume talks with the union.

Previously, the union had initiated an indefinite strike in July but paused it in early August after negotiations with management stalled. Despite this, the union remains committed to demanding better pay and benefits through unexpected strikes. Samsung claimed that the July strike did not affect production.

South Korea has begun exporting heat-treated chicken products to Britain.

The South Korean government announced on Tuesday the launch of exports for heat-treated chicken products, including frozen chicken, dumplings, and samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup), to the UK. This move follows a successful sanitary and quarantine agreement with the EU in December and builds on the strategic partnership from last year's South Korea-UK summit.

Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryung highlighted the significance of this expansion, noting the potential for "gastrodiplomacy" and the recent success of samgyetang exports to the EU. The government plans to support these exports through promotions and efforts to introduce Korean foods to new buyers and distribution channels in Britain, the second-largest economy in Europe.
