South Korea impeached Acting President Han Duck-soo, just two weeks after President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment. Han, who took over following Yoon’s failed martial law declaration on December 3, was accused by opposition lawmakers of blocking the impeachment process.

The vote passed with 192 lawmakers in favor, surpassing the 151 needed, as ruling party MPs boycotted the session in protest. Han will be suspended once notified, and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok will act as interim president.

The opposition had sought to appoint three judges to improve their chances in Yoon’s impeachment trial, as the Constitutional Court currently has only six judges, requiring unanimous support to uphold the motion.

Han’s impeachment, the first for an acting president, adds to the political turmoil. The Korean won hit its lowest level since 2008, reflecting the ongoing crisis. The Constitutional Court has 180 days to rule on Han’s impeachment.

South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed that a North Korean soldier captured by Ukrainian forces in the Russia-Ukraine war has died from his injuries.

South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed that a North Korean soldier captured by Ukrainian forces in the Russia-Ukraine war has died from his injuries. This marks the first known capture of a North Korean combatant since Pyongyang began supporting Russia with troops.

The soldier, reportedly injured and gaunt, was captured during a Ukrainian incursion in Russia’s Kursk region, though details of the incident remain unverified. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service shared the confirmation, citing information from allied intelligence.

Ukraine estimates over 3,000 North Korean troops have been killed or wounded in the Kursk region. North Korean units face heavy casualties, logistical issues, and supply shortages due to Ukrainian strikes. The deployment of North Korean forces follows a mutual defense pact between Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin, signaling an escalation in the nearly three-year conflict.

K-pop groups dominate global year-end charts.

This year has been particularly busy for K-pop artists, with groups like aespa releasing multiple albums and BTS members focusing on solo projects during their military service hiatus.

The hard work paid off, as acts like aespa, ILLIT, and solo stars Jimin, Jungkook, and IU earned spots on global year-end music charts.

Aespa made waves with Armageddon, their first full-length album since debuting in 2020. The double title tracks “Supernova” and “Armageddon” dominated music charts in May. In October, the group followed up with their fifth mini-album, Whiplash, another major success.

Their achievements earned international recognition, with Supernova ranked No. 9 on NME's The 50 Best Songs of 2024. NME praised the track’s “bouncy electro beat and stellar hook,” highlighting Aespa’s ability to push boundaries. The song also topped Billboard’s The 25 Best K-Pop Songs of 2024: Staff Picks.
