NEWS 📰
The majority of young teachers are considering quitting due to low salaries.
A recent survey revealed that nearly 90% of teachers in their 20s and 30s are considering leaving the profession due to inadequate pay. This dissatisfaction highlights the growing crisis among young educators, who feel undercompensated and overburdened, leading many to explore alternative careers.
The survey, conducted by the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Association, found that only 0.7% of teachers were satisfied with their salaries, while 93% expressed dissatisfaction. Teachers in their first year earn between 2.19 million won ($1,632) and 2.25 million won monthly, but after deductions, many are left with around 2 million won, barely covering the cost of living.
Young teachers are increasingly leaving the profession, with the number of educators with less than 10 years of experience who quit rising from 448 in 2020 to 576 in 2023. Many respondents believe improved pay and stronger protections of teachers' rights are essential to retaining talent.
Experts stress the need for better compensation and working conditions to address this issue. While significant salary increases may be challenging due to teachers' public employee status, measures such as enhancing allowances, expanding training opportunities, and supporting advanced degrees could help alleviate dissatisfaction and retain young educators.
Bold remarks by Yoon's aide on the U.S. elections highlight concerns about Trump.
Kim Tae-hyo, a senior foreign policy aide to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, expressed concerns that a potential return of former U.S. President Donald Trump could weaken the U.S. security umbrella, particularly regarding the costs associated with deploying strategic assets to South Korea. Kim's comments, made during a forum at The Sejong Institute, are notable for their candid nature, diverging from the typical caution South Korean officials exercise when discussing U.S. elections.
While Kim emphasized that the trilateral cooperation framework between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan is likely to remain strong even under a Trump administration, he also highlighted concerns about Trump's approach to the U.S.-South Korea alliance, referencing past instances where Trump sought to increase Seoul's financial contributions for the stationing of U.S. troops.
Kim's remarks also included critical observations about the Democratic nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting that her foreign policy team may need more experienced advisers. These comments have raised eyebrows, with some observers noting that such straightforward remarks from a senior official might be seen as inappropriate, particularly in the delicate context of international diplomacy.
